Well it's about time...

Everyone else has been doing it, so why not me. Long, long ago, I learned that often crazier things happen to me than to other people. Maybe this will help me remember them. Even better, I'll finally have a forum to rant, keeping me from screaming on street corners for a few more days.

Nothing ventured

It's been a long time since my last post. If people still read this back then, well, they've no doubt stopped by now. I'd imagine there was a small spike in traffic after Teena linked to my `blog, but that's probably tapered off too.

All the more reason to start anew.

Lots has happened. Some interesting stories (like this amazing beetle I found and of which I will post photos soon), some productive stories (I went back to the MFO, gave a talk, and did a good bit of work), and some sad stories (Pam has been having some troubles and Dad is slowly but surely getting worse). Tim is out in CA now with his job, and it's funny how that has affected me in subtle ways. It just makes the other stressors in life a little harder to deal with, and I only notice it because I've started having weird, intellectual nightmares. Not the "oh my gosh, this is scary" kind, but the "My dad's illness is really hard on my mom, and I'm worried she's not doing enough for herself". How nerdy!

None of this is why I'm posting. I'm doing this because I have decided to change my diet radically for the month of October.
  • I'm going to be a vegetarian.
  • I'm going to minimize processed food.
  • I'm going to try to eat locally.

I'm not going to be one of those "snooty" or "pushy" vegetarians. If I'm at someone's house and they have made a nice, meat-based meal, then I will eat it. I think it is rude otherwise. I'll just not get any for myself.

Some points in this will be tougher than others. It's actually, I think, relatively easy to eat locally here in c'ville, even in restaurants. Many of my favorites work very hard to buy from local farms, so that's nice. I'll be spending some time this coming month in CA and in Chi-town, though, and this will make things a little trickier. Luckily, I'll be staying with healthy people in both places, so meals at home will be easier. Easier, in fact, than at home, where I don't ever cook!

I hope this will also help me save a little money. I've had to pay out of pocket for some recent work related travel, etc, and that has made things a little tighter. It's also tougher with Tim out in CA. Tickets to the Left Coast ain't cheap!
